daily rant : the Top 10 reasons why "best of" lists are crap

For all the things people have in common, we are all very different.

Look at any "Top #" of whatever lists that many magazines (or websites) run. Very soon after, you'll see comments from readers, or one by the web-master, that sums up all the comments received complaining all the "best of" choices missed. This happens. It's all a matter of perspective. Different strokes for different folks, as the old saying goes.
"Best of " lists are subjective. Take for example, with all the interest in vampires, magazines that have posted the best of what they feel (or perhaps the result of an online survey) is the Top 20 Vampires of all time. Even surveys are subjective. Not everyone knew about the survey, perhaps they don't have internet access, or whatever reason.
Several of these "best of" lists have many of the same characters (from books, TV shows and movies), but every single list had the characters in different orders, each one deleting many various characters.
You can't please everyone, so I say, why try. Do the best you can to please yourself and if someone doesn't like it, let them make their own list.
